Academic scholarships are awarded based on need, commitment to the community (Guarjila and Tamarindo), academic performance, community service, and work study and fulfillment of values criteria determined by the Tamarindo Council. All awards are approved by unanimous decision by the council.
Wilber Lopez - 2nd year National University studying Journalism - $1,800
Wilber is a 19 year old is in his second year of journalism at the National University in San Salvador. He achieved a B average in his first year. He also was a consistent member of the Tamarindo Community, completed his vacation work study program and community service obligations. He is also a DJ at Radio Sumpul, member of the Indiana Soccer team and plays music at the community mass. His mother was killed during the war. He is being supported by his grandmother. His grant covers partial expenses for his studies while his family covers the other half.

Jobel Orellana - 2nd year Air Force Academy - $2,560
Jobel is in his second year of high school at the Salvadoran Air Force Academy. His goal is to become a pilot. In his first year he did well academically (B average) and survived the extremely strenuous physical demands of the first year students. He lives at the academy and his grant covers tuition, boarding and materials. He is being supported by a single mother with little income. He did well meeting his Tamarindo obligation, completed work study and remains focused on his studies.

Marlon Dubon - 1st year High School Guarjila - $250
Marlon is 15 year old entering his first year at the high school in Guarjila. He was abandoned by both parents and lives with his brothers. He is requesting assistance for books and uniform. He has completed work study and has met the criteria of the Tamarindo Council.

Adult Learning - $1,000
Program to create an afternoon adult learning program which will concentrate on literacy, household management and current events. Fund will create a stipend for a teacher, didactic material, and materials for students.

Art and Culture Program - $2,000
The art program was created in 2009 to provide a space for artistic development in Guarjila. Funds have provided a stipend for teacher and materials for students. The students have been creating murals in Guarjila and the Tamarindo shop. In 2010 the students will complete the Tamarindo mural and paint murals over gang graffiti. Funds will also provide students opportunities to visit art museums and galleries.

The Women's Learning and Recreation fund would establish funds for our team to develop specific programs to support young women in the community.
