Beginnings
The Tamarindo Community began under the inspirations of John Guiliano, a native of Bronx, New York, and a former Jesuit seminarian, who has worked in community development in Mexico and Central America since 1984. The project started as a way to foster healing in an area of El Salvador torn apart by the civil war there that lasted 12 years (1980-1992). The war took the lives of 75,000 Salvadorans, including Archbishop Oscar Romero (d. 3/24/80).

Today
Today, family disintegration and lack of economic opportunity are the greatest challenges for the people of Guarjila, and El Salvador in general. The Tamarindo Community is working to keep families together by creating economic and social opportunities for people to invest themselves in a future in El Salvador.
Programs include: university and high school scholarships, personal development, community service, literacy for children and adults, micro-business, ecotourism, tour cycling, indoor/outdoor soccer & in-line hockey leagues, and art enrichment. In 2009, approximately 100 young people were participating in Tamarindo programs.
